Sustainability in Textiles: From Ancient Times To Today

Although sustainability has become an important concept in today's fashion and textile sector, its roots actually date back thousands of years. In ancient times, people used what they took from nature in the most efficient way, minimizing waste of resources. Textile production was also a part of this understanding.

Natural fibers such as linen, wool and cotton were widely used in civilizations such as ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Rome and the Ottoman Empire. These fibers were produced through organic farming and processed for long-lasting clothes and fabrics. When the clothes were worn out, they were repaired or used for other purposes. Even fabric dyes were obtained from nature and did not cause chemical waste.

With the Industrial Revolution, this natural cycle began to be disrupted. Mass production and the spread of synthetic materials revealed a textile approach that harmed nature. However, sustainability is gaining importance again today. With the circular economy, recyclable materials and ethical production approach, the sustainable textile tradition of the past is being adapted to the modern world.

Sustainability in the textile sector is not actually a new concept, it is just the remembrance of a forgotten approach. By combining the wisdom of the past with today's technology, it is possible to create a more livable world.
