Nonwoven and Non-knitted Textile Products : Nonwoven

Nonwovens are materials that are generally used in the textile industry and are produced by physically or chemically combining fibres together instead of classical weaving or knitting techniques. These materials are usually produced as balls or sheets and are used for many different purposes in various industries. Here are examples of nonwoven products:

  • Nonwoven Cloths :Soft, tactile, light and durable cloths are produced. These cloths are generally used in various applications such as cleaning cloths, wound care, baby diapers, hygiene products and surgical masks.
  • Nonwoven Filtration Materials: Nonwoven materials used in air, water or liquid filtration are known for their high air permeability and filtration properties. For example, they can be used in products such as air filters, water filters and automobile filters.
  • Nonwoven Textile Products:Nonwoven materials can be an alternative to fabric in the textile industry. They can be used in various applications such as clothing, home textiles and decoration products.
  • Nonwoven Packaging Materials:Nonwoven materials are also used in the packaging industry. They can be preferred especially as durable, light and flexible packaging materials.
  • Nonwoven Medical Textiles:Nonwoven materials are used in the production of many products used in medical fields. For example, surgical drapes, surgical clothing, sterile cloths and medical dressings can be produced using nonwoven technology.
  • Nonwoven Floor Coverings:Nonwoven materials with durable, lightweight and waterproof properties can be used in floor coverings. For example, it can be used in applications such as garden cover or swimming pool underlay.

The most intensive use of nonwoven products is in sectors such as hygiene and medical textiles where there is only one chance of use. This has led the nonwoven industry to strategy and innovation in sustainability. Sustainability studies in this sector are concentrated in the following areas:

  1. Recycled and Recyclable Materials:
    • The use of recycled materials in the production of nonwoven products can reduce the sources of raw materials and reduce the amount of waste. Recyclable nonwoven materials can be reused at the end of the product life.
  2. Environmentally Friendly Raw Materials:
    • The use of organic and biodegradable materials in the production of sustainable nonwovens can reduce environmental impacts. For example, the use of organic cotton or biodegradable polymers is common in this field.
  3. Energy and Water Efficiency:
    • Optimisation of energy and water use in production processes is part of sustainability efforts in the nonwovens industry. The use of renewable energy sources and water saving measures can reduce environmental impacts.
  4. Circular Economy Applications:
    • Circular economy principles can be considered in the design of nonwovens. Extending the life of products and ensuring that they can be repaired or recycled encourages a more sustainable approach in the industry.
  5. Chemical Management and Minimisation of Hazardous Substances:
    • Controlling and reducing chemicals used in production processes plays an important role in achieving sustainability goals. Avoiding harmful chemicals or managing them safely can reduce environmental and human health impacts.
  6. Green Certificates and Standards:
    • Compliance with green certifications and sustainability standards for nonwovens is important in providing consumers with reliable and environmentally friendly products. Such certifications contribute to the promotion of sustainable practices in the industry.

By adopting these and similar sustainability measures, the nonwovens industry can increase both its environmental and social responsibility. These efforts contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly development of the industry in the future.
