COP (Conference of the Parties) is an organization that brings together the parties of the climate change agreement signed in 1992. COP28 took place in Dubai between 30 November and 12 December. This conference is a platform to discuss the steps to be taken against the climate crisis.
A graphical analysis of the last 28 years shows a growing relationship between greenhouse gas emissions, world average temperature and COP meetings. COP meetings alone do not solve the problem, but they increase global awareness and the decisions taken affect the investments of countries.
While Turkey undertakes only one percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, it is among the countries that feel the effects of the climate crisis intensely. However, the fact that we have an economy based on the use of coal and oil in energy production reveals the need to benefit from international support.
Funding from the World Bank and other international organizations is conditioned on concrete steps to support our climate-related policies. Additionally, we need to focus on renewable energy sources to accelerate the transformation in the energy sector.
At COP28, a target was set to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030. This requires increasing investments in renewable energy and improving energy efficiency. Especially for developing countries, low-cost financing and reducing investment risks are important.
Turkey's transformation in the energy sector should be realized by focusing on sustainable and environmentally friendly investments. Otherwise, we may face the risk of economic and social collapse.
The fashion industry must also take more responsibility for climate change. Efforts should be made to achieve balance between sustainability goals and sales growth targets. COP meetings should focus on this industry's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and emphasize the importance of clear commitments.
